will sing for sponsorships

Any of you who know me at all know that I am kind of freaking out right now. I love to sing, but am terrified of singing in public. It took me almost ten years to sing in front of my husband, and three years to do karaoke. But here I am, offering to make my YouTube debut for sponsorship money. Why? If I bring in at least a $1 donation in a creative fashion between now and 11:59 pm Sunday 7/18, I will have an opportunity to win a $50 gift card to a bookstore of my choice — and I really want that gift card. But also because I want Clarion to be around for a long, long time.

So here’s my offer. If you sponsor me for at least $1 between now and 11:59pm Sunday 7/18, I will sing for your sponsorship. Just one dollar. That’s all I need to be eligible for the gift card. Not that it wouldn’t be cool if you donated more than a dollar. But to be eligible for this gift card, I just need one teeny tiny little dollar, so what do you say?

UPDATE!
Monday, July 19, 2010

FIRST: I won the gift card! Thank you everybody who supported me, either by donating, retweeting, or even “just” your basic cheerleading! I appreciate your support more than you can know.

SECOND: I am extending my offer to sing for my sponsors. If I receive at least $16 in new sponsorships before 7pm on Sunday , July 25, I will sing for each donor. And yes, that includes @OldSpice Guy or his pal @IsaiahMustafa. I’m not giving up hope on you guys!

You know, it would be even more cool if a whole lot of you donated at least one dollar though. So here’s what I’ll do if more than one of you donate at least a dollar:

  • I will sing a song and post it on YouTube for each person who donates at least one dollar between now and 11:59pm Sunday 7/18. Sorry, if you decide to donate $25, I’m not singing you 25 songs, that’s the first catch. The second catch is that I get to pick the song.
  •

  • HOWEVER, if I collect $25 in donations between now and Sunday, I’ll let the person who donated the 25th dollar pick the artist whose song I’ll sing.
  •

  • AND, if I collect $50 in donations, I’ll let the person who donated the 50th dollar pick the song from my playlist.
  •

  • AND, if I collect $100 in donations, I’ll let the person who donated the 100th dollar pick any song he or she wants. If it’s a song I don’t know, I can’t guarantee I’ll do any good though — but if it’s out of my range, I can almost guarantee that it won’t be any good. You have been warned.

After I’ve loaded up my MP3 player with songs I enjoy singing along to, I’ll post the playlist. Just for an idea though, here are some artists off the top of my head who I can sing to: Billy Joel, Simon & Garfunkel, Carly Simon, Sugarland, Rascal Flatts, Kathy Mattea, Des’ree, Corrine Rae Bailey, Michael Franti, Meat Loaf, Joan Jett, Concrete Blonde, and Sheryl Crow.

And of course, if the @OldSpice Guy or his friend @IsaiahMustafa donate at least one dollar, I’ll sing it in my bathroom. (What they hey, right? I told you, I don’t like giving up.)

You can sponsor me here. Then please come back post a comment here. Once I’ve confirmed the donations, I’ll start making the video(s) for YouTube.

Thank you everybody! I won the gift card!! ::happy dance::

    From the Clarion Write-a-Thon newsletter:

Sometimes the biggest obstacles in the way of asking for sponsorships are our own personal inhibitions, and nobody knows this better than Kimberly Gonzalez. Though she describes herself as shy, she has overcome her timidity for the sake of Clarion and decided to sing for her supper (as it were). A longtime singer afraid to perform in public, Kimberly posted on her blog offering up a song on YouTube for each person who sponsored her. Though she didn’t post the offer until Saturday, she managed to get three sponsors before Sunday night and earn herself a $50 gift card!

Picking songs out today. For Elena, I’m singing an old favorite: 455 Rocket.

For Karen, it’s Up to the Mountain for the work she does.

Only waiting for Paul to give me his pick, since he donated the 25th dollar.

Will start recording the songs tomorrow. Eeep!!

Thank you, Beth. :) I could never sing along with female pop musicians and in school, all the other girls were sopranos — I felt like a toad compared to them. It wasn’t until I started listening to country that I found female artists I could sing along with. It still took years to get the confidence to sing in front of people I knew. Add a little social anxiety in the mix and sing in front of people I don’t know — no way! Scary. This is still a little removed though because I can’t see the faces people are making when they hear me flub a note or a lyric. One down, two more to go. The next one is proving to be more challenging that I had expected, but it’s fun, too.

  12. Elena says:

Wow! You blew me away, Kim. What an amazing voice you have… And despite any nervousness, your presentation was smoking. What’s next, American Idol? BTW, I had an old civic that fit this description perfectly – and I cried when I had to sell her.

Wow, thanks ladies. I’m really, just … wow. Thank you.

Elena, I hope you are safe and dry after the storm madness today?
