Proofreading
This is what some people often are thinking of when they talk about editing. Proofreading is actually two different kinds of services.
Strictly speaking, proofreading is reading hard copy against an original document to ensure that no new errors have been introduced into the new document and that any corrections marked have been included.
Cold proofreading, what some people think of when they talk about editing, is correcting egregious spelling, punctuation, and grammar errors (as well as as errors in page layout and design) without the benefit of an original document for comparison.
This is our most basic level of editorial service, and can be applied to any kind of document: student papers, grants, marketing materials, novel manuscripts, etc.
Copyediting
Copyediting goes a step beyond proofreading to include checking your document for style, usage, consistency and accuracy. We have solid working knowledge of both Chicago and AP style, and we have access to a variety of other style manuals as well. We will also create a style sheet to ensure internal consistency in your document. We always strive to preserve the author’s voice — after all this is your document we’re editing, not ours. As part of our effort to maintain your voice, we will often make suggestions rather than making substantial changes — you will retain creative control over your work, and you can decide how best to implement any of those changes we suggest.
